The Saraswati temple located at Basara is one of the two famous Saraswati temples in India with the other one n the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The temple has rich legend behind its making.

It is popularly said that the Sage Vyasa, during his stay at Basara, used to bring three handfuls of sand after bathing in Godavari and would keep it that on a same place everyday. This sand later transformed into images of Goddesses- Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali. However there are some other saying as well. Acoording to Brahmandapuranam, Adikavi Valmiki installed Saraswati and wrote Ramayana at this place. You will find a mrable image of Valmiki and his samadhi near the temple. Some also say that ‘Bijialudu’ a Karnataka king, who ruled the province of Nandagiri in the sixth century, constructed this temple at Basara.
